2.1. Case study: Injuries in Sport

In 2012, it becomes clear that there is a growing public concern with the number of serious injuries to sportspersons resulting from rough and aggressive behaviour during games. Such injuries happen routinely in many sports.

However, the players and administrators of most sports are reluctant to lay criminal charges against the players who cause injuries. This is because there is a tradition among sportspersons that law does not belong on the sportsfield. In addition, it is difficult to successfully prosecute offenders in such circumstances under the general provisions of the existing law.

The Minister of Sport and Recreation in the Victorian government argues that behaviour causing injuries in sport must be discouraged. He suggests such behaviour should be clearly established as a criminal offence, punishable by a fine or imprisonment. The cabinet agrees to implement this policy.
