2. The legislative process

2.7. Processing a Bill in the legislature

What procedure must be followed in the legislature for a Bill to become law? Here are some important questions that arise:

  • How is a Bill first brought to the attention of the members of the House?
  • How will the general purpose of this Bill be explained to the members of the House?
  • What opportunity will the members of the legislature have to ask questions about the provisions in the Bill, and debate them?
  • Can members of the legislature change the provisions in the Bill after it has been introduced into the House?
  • What is required to get the final approval of the House for a Bill?
  • What happens after the Bill is finally approved by the House?

In the pages that follow, you will be asked these questions in turn, with feedback to your answers.
