6.10. Other principles of interpretation.

 

 

 

In addition to the rules already dealt with, the common law recognises several additional principles which can help to resolve particular interpretation questions. The special principles are known by Latin phrases: see the list below.

These special principles must be used in conjunction with other relevant interpretation approaches, especially giving effect to the purpose of the legislation. The principles must be applied with caution because in some cases, more than one of them might possibly be applicable, with differing results. This can make predicting the outcome of interpretation questions difficult.
