4.1. The importance of grouping law into divisions

 Individual laws can be grouped together according to the kind of situation or conduct they regulate.  Each such group of laws represents a’ division’, ‘area’ or ‘category’ of law.

It is helpful to group individual laws into divisions (or areas) because this makes it easier to find the laws that are relevant to particular cases when they arise.  You should try to become familiar with the conventional divisions that are commonly used.

Organising law in this way is also helpful because, once grouped within a division, the rules can be set out in a logical sequence.  This gives structure to a related set of legal rules and makes it easier to learn and understand them.
