Case names consist of the names of the parties involved in the case. In civil cases, the plaintiff's and defendant's names are used, separated by the letter v (for 'versus' or 'against'). In Australia it is customary to say 'and' rather than 'versus' or 'vee' when saying the case name. In criminal cases, the case name refers to 'the State' (or the person representing the state) and the family name of the accused person.
