In most universities, students studying a law subject are set what are known as ‘problem-solving’ exercises. These consist of a set of specific hypothical (imagined) facts that give rise to one or more legal questions. Students are asked to find and apply the relevant law in an appropriate way to predict the outcome of such a case.
The techniques and processes suitable for problem-solving can be learned and practised. When you are asked to deal with a problem-solving exercise, try to remember and use the processes explained in this section.
