Finding law online
4. Finding Australian cases by name

4.1. Using the information in the citation of a case

Each reported case has it's own citation which contains information that makes it easy to find. The process is similar to that used to find legislation by name.  Suppose you want to find the report of Taylor v Johnson (1983) 151 CLR 422. The citation tells you that this is a decision of the High Court of Australia, reported in the Commonwealth Law Reports in 1983.

Suppose you choose to search the AustLII databases. From the homepage, choose the 'cases and legislation' databases and 'Cth' (Commonwealth) as the jurisdiction.

From the list that appears, look under the heading 'Cth Case law'  and choose 'High Court of Australia' .
