Finding law online
2. Alternative legal databases

2.1. Choosing an online database

There are a large number of alternative electronic databases that provide convenient access to legal materials.  Access to some of these databases is free: others charge a fee.  With regard to free databases, there is an umbrella organisation, called the Free Access to Law Movement, which provides useful links to over 50 member organisations.

Which databases you choose to use will be a matter of your own needs and preferences, based on your experience.  They way the various databases are structured and operate is similar enough that the basic principles of searching for materials apply to most of them.

The following free-access databases are described in the following pages of this section.

  • The Australian Information Institute (AustLII)
  • Judgements and Decisions Enhanced (Jade)
  • Government databases
