8.2. Distinguishing inductive and deductive reasoning

 

 

Consider the following examples and decide if they take the form of either ‘deductive’ or ‘inductive’ reasoning.  In each case, click on the answer of your choice.  Note that you are not being asked to decide whether or not the conclusions are correct, but only to identify the type of reasoning involved.

  • Rule: All persons under the age of 18 have limited legal capacity
  • Facts: Paul is 17 years old.
  • Conclusion: Therefore Paul has limited legal capacity.
  • Fact: Paul is 17 years old
  • Conclusion: Because of his young age, Paul should not be held to legal transactions.
