When truncation is not appropriate a 'wildcard' may be useful.  To incorporate a wildcard into a search term, a question mark is inserted at appropriate places to indicate that any single letter in that position is acceptable in the words being sought. For example:

wom?n will retrieve both 'woman' and 'women'.

litiga?? will retrieve 'litigant' and 'litigate' but not 'litigation'.

Both truncation and wildcard searching are extremely useful, but must be used with care to avoid retrieving unwanted documents.
