First Principles of Business Law

Finding law online
1. The organisation of online legal materials

1.2. Why not just do a Google search?

Current general purpose search engines such as Google are well developed and smart enough to give good results to most queries.  However, to look for legal materials in this way involves certain difficulties.  One is that it may not be clear exactly where the documents you retrieve in this way come from, or how reliable they are.  Furthermore, your search may not take proper account of the way legal materials are separated and organised in dedicated legal databases, making it difficult to evaluate the importance and relevance of what you find.

It is therefore worthwhile to know something about legal databases and the recommended approaches to finding what you need.  Once you have an understanding of the overall framework, you may experiment further with less risk.
