(a) Even after the Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901, Australia remained a colony, subject to the laws of Britain until 1986.

(b) Although Australia is now a sovereign state, it is still possible to take a case on appeal from the High Court of Australia to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England.

(c) To the present day, the Australian Commonwealth and states have the same constitutional monarch as the United Kingdom, but this does not mean that there is any political unity between Australia and the United Kingdom.
