Illusory

The word 'illusory' can be contrasted with the word 'real'. An illusion exists when something that appears to be real turns out not to have been real at all. For example, it may appear, in some circumstances, that a promise is being made, when in fact, on proper analysis, it turns out there was only the illusion of a promise. When a promise is only illusory, rather than real, it cannot be relied on.
