						Court hierarchy
The courts of the Australian Commonwealth, states and territories are ranked in accordance with their powers.
The most powerful courts are ranked the highest: the least powerful courts are ranked the lowest.
The Commonwealth, and each state and territory, has its own separate hierarchy of courts.
Generally, appeals progress from the lower-ranked courts to higher-ranked courts within the same hierarchy.
