(a) That's right. European occupation of Australia began in 1788 when the British established the colony of New South Wales.

Over the next 50 years or so, several other separate colonies were also established until there were six altogether: New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia and South Australia.

The origins of Australia's modern constitutional arrangements lie in these events.
