The word 'jurisdiction' has various meanings. In one sense, it refers to the geographical area within which a court has the right to exercise its powers. The jurisdiction of state and territory courts is limited to the borders of their particular states and territory, while Commonwealth courts have jurisdiction throughout Australia.
In another sense, the word jurisdiction refers to the extent of the powers that a court has to hear and decide cases. Some courts have more powers (greater jurisdiction) than others.
A court's jurisdiction can also be qualified as 'civil' or 'criminal'.
A court's jurisdiction might also be confined to hearing original or appeal cases.
