It is not true that, in Australia, a case can be taken on appeal from a lower ranking court to a higher ranking court in any of the Australian court hierarchies.  The right of appeal exists only to higher courts within the same hierarchy as the lower court in which the case was previously heard.

It is true that the High Court of Australia is the highest ranking court in all the Australian court hierarchies. 

It is also true that, in all Australian court hierarchies, the courts are ranked in order of seniority, the lower ranking courts being described as ‘inferior’ to the higher ranking ‘superior’ courts.
