(a)  A ‘hierarchy’ of courts refers to the ranking of courts in accordance with the extent of their power to hear and decide cases.

(b)  There is a separate ‘hierarchy’ of courts for the Commonwealth of Australia, for each of the Australian states, and for each of the self-governing territories.

(c)   A precedent set by a court will be binding on all the other courts in the same hierarchy.
