In some cases, a court may order the defendant to return property to the plaintiff, rather than ordering the payment of damages.
This is appropriate, for instance, when the defendant is in possession of property belonging to the plaintiff and that the property has some particular value to the plaintiff. In such cases, return of the particular property may be preferable to compensatory damages.
