Australian jurisdictions have legislative schemes to compensate victims of crime for the harm they have suffered.
Getting compensation under these schemes does not prevent the victim from bringing a later private action in tort law. But the compensation that can be claimed in any later action is reduced if the victim has already recovered damages from other sources.
