Contemptuous damages

Contemptuous damages are those awarded when, although the plaintiff has established that the defendant is liable in tort, the jury considers that the plaintiff's conduct has been reprehensible. In such cases, the damages awarded are of a trifling sum and are called contemptuous damages.

Contemptuous damages are most commonly awarded in defamation cases.
