1 (b). That's wrong. The common law principle is that damages are awarded 'once and for all'. But you should note that there are legislative exceptions to this rule, which we will consider a little later.
Of course, it can be very difficult to assess damages properly on a 'one off' basis at the time of trial. As Lord Scarman said in Lim Poh Choo v Camden and Islington AHA [1980] AC 174 at 183: "There is really only one certainty, the future will prove the award to be either too high or too low".
