(a)  The High Court of Australia is the highest ranking court in all the Australian court hierarchies.

(b)  In all Australian court hierarchies the courts are ranked in order of seniority, the lower ranking courts being described as ‘inferior’ to the higher ranking ‘superior’ courts.

(c)   In Australia, it is possible for a case to be taken on appeal from a lower ranking court to a higher ranking court in any of the Australian court hierarchies.
