4 (b) That's right. The courts have recognised that either the free and deliberate act of a person, OR a causally independent event that happens coincidentally with the defendant's conduct, may be treated as a novus actus interveniens.

Examples would be a lightning strike; floods or fires, or an accident of some type not due to negligence.
