Near the beginning of most modern Acts is a 'purpose' section which sets out the broad objectives of the Act as a whole. This is useful, firstly, in assessing the relevance of an Act to a particular question you may be researching.
A purpose section is also useful in interpreting ambiguous or unclear provisions in the Act.
