The title

The title of this particular Act indicates broadly what the legislation is about and the year in which it was enacted. The title of this Act also shows that it is Victorian legislation.

Modern Acts have fairly brief titles. Older Acts tend to have much longer and more explanatory titles, which can be cumbersome. In these older Acts, special provision is made for a 'short title' by which the Act can be referred to more conveniently.

The number of an Act (shown below the title) can be useful when looking for the Act in a library or database.
