A 'key word' or phrase is a word or phrase that is used in a document and which is sufficiently unique to identify that particular document and distinguish it from other similar documents.
For example, the names of the parties to a case are most often sufficiently unique to be a key phrase, allowing you to locate the report of that case in a database.
