Which truncation is best depends on your purposes and preferences.

The truncated term forg* will find all the words listed and others too, for example, forgery, forging, forgeries, forger, forged, forgers, etc.

But it will also retrieve a great many unwanted documents which contain words such as, forgive, forgave, forgiving, forgiveness, forgo, forgone, forget, forgets, forgotten, forgetful, forget-me-not, etc.

Using forge* will cause the search to miss "forging" but will eliminate seven out of eleven of the unwanted words above.
