The material facts of a case are those facts which serve to characterise the case as belonging to a particular category or type of case. When a court compares one case to another, to decide how similar they are, the court ignores the more detailed, inconsequential facts which have no real bearing on the outcome, and concentrates on the more important facts (material facts) that determine the essential nature of the case.
